How long should a school bag last

I was at grammar school in the 60s.  A good old fashioned leather satchel lasted the 7 years

Only if they are unable to prove it isn't an inherent fault or that it wasnt insufficiently durable as a backpack (not as a football)

Like strained stitching on the shoulder from where the bag has been overloaded with books, or as the OP admitted the (cleaner than it was) dirty rucksack.
