Hi all I have had to return a guitar to the USA, reason being not suitable. Can I claim back the VAT and Import duties I had to pay when it entered the UK? TIA

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/refunds-and-waivers-on-customs-debt suggests that it's only possible for defective, damaged or non-compliant goods rather than something deemed 'not suitable':
You can claim repayment or remission on goods imported from outside the UK when:
- you’ve rejected the goods because at the time of declaring them to a customs procedure they’re:
- defective
- damaged before being cleared by customs
- not compliant with the terms of the contract you imported them under
