Applying for social housing
Hello everyone,
I have a question about applying for social housing. My husband was evicted as a private tenant 9 years ago, but I only recently found out about it while preparing to fill out the application forms. Will this eviction history affect our eligibility to apply for social housing together, or should I apply on my own instead?
To provide some context, my husband has developed severe health conditions and is unable to work. I am his carer and the sole provider for our household. We are currently on a rolling monthly tenancy, and I’m worried this might put us at risk of becoming homeless in the long term, as we have no safety net or family support to rely on.
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure about your social housing question but you can still be given notice to quit from social housing it's no different, so what are you thinking that a rolling tenancy puts you at risk? When the new renters rights bill is passed all tenancies will be rolling tenanciesStalbanschap said:We are currently on a rolling monthly tenancy, and I’m worried this might put us at risk of becoming homeless in the long term, as we have no safety net or family support to rely on.

Sorry to read your story.
Different councils & housing associations have different processes and procedures so there is no one answer, and without knowing which it won't be possible to easily answer.
Which country - eg Wales, NI?? Again different processes.
Have you carefully, - and twice - read the guidance on your local council's site about such applications - e.g.
https://www.slough.gov.uk/housing/apply-council-home/2
- if not suggest you do this first...
Why was he evicted ?? If via an s21 notice in England which requires no reason at all ( no reason at all - courtesy of M Thacher - ) can't see any landlord rejecting for that. But if, say, rent arrears of a significant amount, debt court judgement findings, they may well be on public records of CCJ (or similar in other countries).
Even if accepted onto the housing waiting list you almost certainly won't be rehoused soon: Some councils have typical waits of 5, 10 or more years..
Even if housed by council or housing association you will still be - perhaps after an initial fixed term - still end up on rolling monthly (maybe 4-weekly) tenancies. Sorry, that's reality.
Good luck.

Even a CCJ from rent arrears will have fallen off is credit report after 9 years, so what are you worried about that could still affect your chances?0

It's always a possibility of course, but it's very, very unlikely that you would be given notice in social housingFlorayG said:
