EA is err.. incorrect.. I'd treat everything else they tell me with great suspicion if they got something as basic as this wrong...
Estate Agents aren't allowed to charge tenants fees any more, but back in the day, they did this because they could scam both the tenant and the landlord a fee. I seem to remember ours were £85.

- that probably encourages them to put up the rent, effectively passing it on to the tenant
- still could end up pushing an uninformed tenant into a new fixed term even if that's not what they actually want1
