Setting up a new PC

Hi there.
We recently bought a new desktop PC from Mesh. It’s the third one we have had from them and have always been happy. When it came there was part of the fan loose in the case and the top was dented so we rang them and they arranged pick up and said they would sort it out. This they did and we have just received the replacement. We assumed, as with the others, it would come ready to go and all we would have to do is ‘plug and play’. So why have they sent a whole bag full of leads and connectors and an assortment of instruction books for which we would need a degree to understand that we can’t make any sense of? Am I missing something? There is also a lead in the casing loose which has the word ‘sata’ on it that doesn’t seem to go anywhere! Can anyone please offer some advice? Thanks.

We intend to but I would like to know if receiving a PC like this is the norm? It’s a few years since we bought the last one and we had a bag of bits described as spares but I don’t recall it looking like we would have to connect it all!
  • The sata cable will be there for any extra driver that may be installed in the future. Nothing to worry about. There should be another already connected to the main drive ( unless it is not a sata drive that is installed).
It really is good to get all the cables and documents rather than the opposite!

Ok. Just surprised to find it in the casing rattling about! So what about all the extra cables and connectors in the bag? Are these just spares? Nothing is clear. Yes we plan to ring Mesh tomorrow but wanted a heads up first. Thanks.

So is the PC fully build and operates when switched on, with the bag of extra leads etc along with the manuals just the left over parts that they have included?

Or has it arrived part assembled with the expectation you will finish the build?

Former would be normalish for a custom build PC company, the latter very unusual unless you bought it as a self build.

We didn’t buy it as a self build that’s for sure. Sounds like we need to take another look in daylight as it didn’t arrive till after 6 this evening. That makes sense. Thank you for your response - much appreciated.

PC Specialist (who I do installs for) are similar. The leads and extras are for you to keep in case you want to make additions. The main unit is all you need to worry about. hook up the power, display, and input.

Your computer will be made up of various components. Several of those components may come with various leads and cables. In all likelihood Mesh has thrown those that are not required into the box as well as the assembled computer. I wish some other assemblers would do this rather than keeping spare cables themselves.

FYI, most PC cables have unique connectors so they'll only plug into matching sockets (ie. youcan't accidentally plug your SSD into the power supply).
For SATA connections the general rule would be to start connecting things at the lowest numbered socket.
However, if the PC has arrived without the componentry connected then that means it's not been tested.
It may also mean that there's not software (even operating system).
If, as others suggest, it's come with the extra unused leads inside the case, then that's probably not an issue; just put them somewhere for safekeeping if you ever need to modify or sell the machine.
