Refund via email request

Today I paid for two chocolate drinks that were so poor quality I asked for a refund. As I'd paid via Apple pay, I was told that I had to email them to get the refund paid back into my account.  This sounds wrong to me and I was wondering if any on here knew the law on this subject

I thought apple pay was just a nifty way of using your debit card - so a refund to the debit card should be easy?

While it is, refund would have to go via apple. Quite how retailer could not do that who knows.

I would presume they just enter a negative value in the terminal, then you just tap with apple pay and the credit goes back to your account - yes it may be a bit of a faff for the retailer - but they should still do it.
