Who is our supplier?

We moved into our current house around 18 years ago. After 6 months or so we realised that we were not receiving gas bills, or paying anyone on direct debit. In those days, people used to regularly knock on doors to try and get residents to change utility providers, and we tried 2 or 3 times to get our gas and electricity combined with the same supplier. This never seemed to happen and we just carried on, reassured by Martin's comment that in a situation like this we could only be charged a maximum of one year's usage. We are now thinking of moving house and decided we need to address this situation. I have contacted a number of utility companies and no one seems to think we are their customers. Also, when looking at "who is my provider" type websites, our house doesn't seem to be listed. We do have a gas supply, however, with a meter. Any thoughts, please? (apart from not moving house, that is!)

Have you tried moving just your gas supply to someone other than your existing electricity supplier?0

Octopus would likely supply you as a new customer with an unregistered meter no questions asked. You might have to move your electric to them though.

I had a similar issue when I moved into a rented property. I had no idea who the electricity supplier was. Ofgem were able to assist. This is from their website in relation to gas:
Find my gas supplier
The Meter Point Administration Service can tell you who your gas supplier is.
You can:
- use their online Find My Supplier search tool
- call them on 0870 608 1524 (calls to this number are charged at 7p per minute, plus your phone company's access charge)
- get your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), which tells your energy supplier where your meter is and your gas supply number

Easy to find who the supplier is if there is one, impossible if the supply is shipperless because there isn't one. Any supplier should be able to look up the meter serial number to see if it is recorded anywhere. That is what happened to my granddaughter, Octopus said the meter serial is not on the database and took her on and registered the supply using the current meter read as the starting point.
