Bathroom Fittings Staining

Options
New fitted bathroom.

we purchased taps, shower valves, and spouts from a UK retailer made by a brand based in the UK, in their brushed brass finish

we have a water softener fitted, however the  new taps all have darks water spots that cannot be removed. This to me is a defect in the items.

who is responsible? The retailer or the manufacturer?

the manufacturer offer a 15 year warranty.

It’s definitely not the water as all other taps in the house are fine. It’s just the finish of these new taps not being very hardy.

can we file a claim against the manufacturer? Or is the retailer the one that’s liable?

In the first instance, contact the retailer and state that all the goods you bought have discoloured. See what they say.

I probably wouldn't mention the water softener, as it just confuses the matter - you'll probably get a few people on here making strange suggestions because of it too.

    When did you buy them?

    How to word it?

    Something like
'Dear Mr Retailer, all the new taps I bought from you have darks water spots that cannot be removed. This to me is a defect in the items.'
    would be a good start.

However, what are the maintenance and care instructions for the taps?
Brass, like other copper alloys, naturally develops a patina when exposed to oxygen in the air. This
    is
normally considered a feature of the material and not a fault.

Here is the natural patina on a brass pen after two weeks.

Have your taps developed that colour?
  • I bet they blame "Harsh cleaning chemicals" used to clean the brass.
