Note that LPAs take months to go through. Definitely fill in the form yourselves. No point paying a solicitor to type the same information you would type. The form is a doddle:

Thanks all of you. Interested to know how to create an LPA online without the need for a Solicitor. So long as it works thats all that is required. elsien said:
If she preferred to use a solicitor to make a power-of-attorney, that is her choice. But it is possible to do it yourself online much more cheaply if your affairs are not complex.
Could you explain more? Im happy to Google it but would be good to know we were on the same page.

What I did with my mum was print off the blank forms, and give them to her so she’d got time to think about what she wanted in them.
Once she had  done that and we looked at the questions ( because she wanted a couple of things in that weren’t workable) then we just paid, typed the document up properly, printed it off and got everyone to sign it before sending it off.

Basically less is more and you need to make sure that you get the order signing right but other than that it is pretty simple.
it’s really the practicalities of thinking about who you want as attorneys, replacement attorneys, that sort of thing. There was a query about something that she’d put in because it had  gone across two pages and she hadn’t dated the second page or something, So there was the choice of leaving out the second page or paying again and resubmitting, because if you do make a mistake, you have to start again and pay again.

As I say it depends on how complex you want them to be. My brother used a solicitor because he has a business so as well as the health and welfare power-of-attorney he needed two finance ones, one piece personal finances one for the business.
For many people that’s just not relevant.

there’s a long thread on here somewhere where people doing their own LPAs can ask questions. Might be worth a skim read of that as well.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I think Sarahspangels has hit the nail on the head for the short term but LPA has got to be the way to go long term. She does not use a smart phone and very rarely picks up her texts, but if she had a phone with the app on it, i don't suppose there would be anything stopping anyone helping her authorise a payment, through that phone, with her consent of course.

Ok, thanks for your help. Im off to buy a smart phone and make an appointment with her solicitor.
You don't need a smartphone per se. As you can still do online banking and instead of a smartphone app - generate codes through a physical secure key (I know for a fact Nationwide and HSBC still do those).

Obviously you can get an OTP sent to any old school mobile phone.
  • First Direct would be the one to go for. 24/7 365 days a year phone contact.
I’ve had or have account with, FD, Halifax, Starling, Barclays, NatWest, Nationwide, Chase, plus another 10 at least.
Issues with them all, but FD resolve most issues with one call.
Santander have a bad rep on here for freezing accounts.
FD have not held a payment of mine for just over two years, if a payment from then is not made after 2 hours I call
and as for the fraud team, 5 mins later issue is resolved.
2 year ago they held 3 payments from Friday to Monday, that cost me £125 ish in interest.
Rang to sort on Monday, money sent, £125 lost interest was in my account 5 mins later.
A day of two later £100 good will gesture arrived.
When they mess up, they pay up.
