Sky/Sky Plus

My Sky box went off yesterday with the thunderstorms and is still not working. I thought I would take the opportunity therefore to upgrade to Sky+ as one of my mates has just had it installed for £89.00 and I had been toying with the idea anyway. Rang Sky and it turns out that because I am an existing customer, it will cost £199 plus £60 installation!!! The £89.00 is only for new customers! However, if I want to pay £99.00 plus £10 per month for a minimum of 12 months, I can have it installed in an extra room....I don't want it in another room and I don't know about anyone else, but I sometimes struggle to find anything to watch on one telly never mind two - we only have Sky for the sport mainly.

My inclination is to cancel the whole lot and become a new customer - does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, will I have to wait for a minimum period?

(Sorry if this is on the wrong board, but I am livid about being treated this way when I have been with them for years).

One of my colleagues had the same problem as you. Except, he had cancelled his Sky subscription nearly two years ago, but they still had him on their system as being an existing customer! Even though he obviously was no longer a customer, they still expected him to fork out the same amount of money as you've been quoted to get Sky+.

It's absolutely ridiculous, but then it's exactly as the Nationwide advert shows, existing customers are often penalised. The best offers go to 'New customers only'.

say u r moving home and give a months cancellation.

then your other half/housemate/friend/son/daughter/dog rings up and says they are moving in and therefore becomes a "brand new customer"

If you are going to do this dont forget to change your bank details.A Sky rep recently told me they now cross check these with accounts that relate to the same address.

Is this another example of getting what you want through fraud, lying and/or cheating being promoted on this board?? Tut-tut.

If you are willing to do without Sky then negotiate with them on that point. They don't want to lose several hundred pound a year revenue for the price of a digibox. A neighbour did this recently when his standard digibox broke (he didn't care one way or the other about Sky) ... a few weeks later Sky contacted him to see if he would be willing to join again, when he said 'no' (because his digibox was broken) they sent him out a new one FOC and offered him discount for several months. He was going to turn it down (as I said he had no interest in Sky) but in the end he ceeded to the big sad eyes of his wife and children.
