SMETS 2 meters in Oxon

Can anyone in Oxfordshire confirm successful functioning of a SMETS 2 electricity meter? OVO are trying to force me to get one but an OVO engineer told me it could not work without a mobile signal. Seeing info here on MSE I realise he was probably talking about SMETS 1, but I am still suspicious of the veracity of OVO's claim and have asked them to confirm in writing a new meter will not need Wifi or mobile signal. If it works for you, I'll trust it to work for me in the same county or city [Oxford], thank you.

I would expect it to work in Oxford without issue. SMs don’t use wi-FI, but even if there if there is mobile issue at your location, it will work the old fashioned way and you would still need to submit readings. 

You are not going to get a guarantee in writing, just get the SM it will almost certainly work and allow you to access to smart tariffs that could save you some money.

Smets 2 (and 1) in the South (Oxon included) need a mobile phone signal for sending/receiving data.

Currently 2G Telefonica / O2 network, moving to the 4G Vodafone network in the longer term.  So check what mobile network coverage is like in your home if worried.

Most 'problems' will be due to meter location deep within relatively radio-opaque buildings. 
Modern homes have the meters in boxes outside/on external walls so are usually OK.  Towns an Cities are usually better served than some more rural locations.
