Universal credit unfair closure

  • A tip...  You'll need to come up with a good reason why you did not check your journal.   Try to get supporting evidence as to why you couldn't.  You've been on the benefit for a while and right at the start of your claim you will have been informed that it's your responsibility to check your journal as that is the way UC communicates with claimant (unless they made a telephone claim).   I know lots of people don't check, they just look to check their payment statement but that's what the judge will be looking at.  The hearing may not take place for many months.
  • This exact thing happened to me. My claim was closed because I didn’t accept my commitments. BUT I never received a notification to do so. This was reflected in my timeline and recognised by a number of agents so we went through a lengthy reconsideration process only for the agents to falsify a notification after the fact. For some reason I just didn’t expect them to be that malicious but here we are. 4 months with no benefits because I didn’t think I’d need to make a new claim.
Anyway I’m very interested to know if this has happened to loads of people in and around the same time? For me it was the end of October 2024. Wondering if they introduced an automated system that failed and they just covered themselves?

well - naturally there will also be obligations on the claimant which if not fulfilled will have a consequence.

If you can evidence that these obligations were not fully explained then you have a case.

If however, you didn’t fulfill them or read documents correctly, then the consequence is your claim may end.

Might be worth this thread getting closed as it could easily stray into discussion etc.

If you have a specific issue - best to start a new thread with details etc

One of the things any commitments on UC requires claimants to sign into my account often to complete any tasks in my to-do list.
DWP clearly consider weekly as 'often', and give you 7 days to accept your commitments. Even if you did not see or receive any notification, if you were logging in weekly and checking your todo list, you'd see the task to accept your commitments.
To avoid such action in future, I would recommend logging in and checking your todo list at least weekly, and daily if you are required to undertake work related requirements / look for work.

It does clearly state that you need to log in regularly-preferably every day- to make sure you are checking your todo list and commitments. I don't understand the problem as it takes a few seconds to log in if you have a phone
