Vendor not received my in-person debit card payment

Hi there, I hope someone can help me.

Ten days ago, I made a payment for good at a local shop using my debit card.  Tried contactless, but it wanted me to put in my pin, so I inserted the card, put in my pin.  The card terminal said approved, and then it reset back to it's home page, it didn't give the option for a receipt, or show what it should do at the end of a transaction.  The payment showed up in my pending payments with my bank, but didn't show up in their list of transactions on the terminal (we'd had a conversation about how bad the wifi was in the area, and the trouble they'd had since moving to a wireless terminal.)  I said I'd pop back in when the payment had cleared in my bank to check it had appeared in their transaction list, I figured that it would appear when the transactions were pooled at the end of the day.  The transaction cleared in my bank the next day.

Cut to today, they've told me that the payment still isn't showing up their end, even though it's still cleared with me and hasn't been reversed.  Any ideas what's going on?  I know I've paid, I don't have the money anymore, but it's a shop I go to a lot and I don't want them to be without.  Also, I can't afford to repay it (which I'm not, but I want to exhaust every avenue I can to find out where the money is.)

Any advice will be helpful, thanks.

Ask your bank for details of where exactly they sent the payment?

I would print the bank statement to show the shop the money has left your account so they know you are not trying to avoid paying

Money will be in retailers account with their bank. If terminal rebooted then it won't save the transaction.

As above take your statement in & they will have to check their accounts.

If you have got the evidence in the form of the bank statement showing the payment went out, once you have shown them, it’s then up to the shop to sort the issue out with their card payment provider/bank without any further action needed from yourself.

Are you sure it's cleared your account and not at pending stage?
  • The money can't go astray if it is paid by card. You mention they've had issues with the connectivity - typically at the close of business they'll submit all of their transactions on the card machine in an end of day banking process. If it's one of the separate ones like in this case the shopkeeper or one of their staff will need to do it themselves, manually. Have they been able to do this?

Also, I would also generally always get a receipt in all circumstances, and there is no argument that the payment had been made.

You will have your proof the transaction has gone through and been authorised - what happens afterwards is up to the business to follow up with their bankers/card merchant provider. If it is an entry to your statement as a debit, the money will have left your account, and to all intents and purposes is no longer your problem whether it has been received or not.

     First post

The card terminal said approved, and then it reset back to it's home page, it didn't give the option for a receipt, or show what it should do at the end of a transaction
