Import and duty charges

Looking for some advice please. I have shipped a personal effect to a family member in an EU country. I am being told by the courier that I have to pay import and duty charges - the charges are more than what the item is worth. Is this right? I’ve shipped plenty of items to them before and never had to pay.

What is the combined value of the parcel including P&P/Insurance?

The UK is no longer in the EU or the EEA. Since leaving we have introduced new rules that the sender must pay for low value parcel delivery, and we removed the low value VAT exemption. Some EU countries are the same so, for example, if you send a parcel under €150 to France the sender has to pay the taxes. If you do a lot of exporting you can get a code and deal with the matters online and so just pay the taxes etc. If you dont then the courier may charge you and add a fee because of the administration. In the UK those fees are fairly modest but in some countries the fees are massively more.

Obviously pre-brexit it was all within the EU so no taxes or fees to pay.

Are the charges itemised?  Carriage charge, import VAT, customs clearance fee, etc?  I would be surprised that they would be more than the item's value.  What value have you declared?
