Money Moral Dilemma: Should my daughter claim Universal Credit?

  • I would congratulate your daughter on appreciating that taxpayers pay for Universal Credit.  If she doesn't need it good for her for not claiming.  If everyone had such a conscience there would be more available for those in need.
  • Of course she should claim! She'd get precious little at best, but if she's entitled to it, she should claim it. If she doesn't, I predict that when she goes to university she'll wish she had! As it is, it will be weeks on end before her claim is even assessed, so it might be a good lesson for her in how the world of benefits works in case she ever needs to claim again. Her savings might be gone before her claim is processed, anyway.

Annual income 20 pounds, annual expenditure 20 pounds ought and six, result misery."

Of course she should claim so as to get her National Insurance contributions paid, and she can spend the money or save it as she sees fit. (Although If she has more than £16,000 in savings she wouldn’t be eligible.)
  • I have not claimed universal credit .I had to leave work because of illness. The comment about National insurance is important.I have looked for suitable jobs, and, hadI known,I could have been registered as not receiving UC but as a job seeker I could have had NI credits.I am one of the WASPI women, paid NI for 40 years but since being ill have not,and am not entitled toe a full state pension.
  • If you’re not short, you’ve worked hard. You’ve paid your tax etc. she’s better off claiming what she can, it’s not like the uni system is generous these days.

Better her using it, she’s entitled to it
