Can anyone recommend a cheap 'pen' or stylus just for typing and editing text on a G62 Motorola screen?  Do people normally buy a related pad to fit the stylus and phone on so the two don't become separated?

Just google it, (dabber pen for phone), there are hundreds of them on Amazon alone, and probably some in your local Post Office or supermarket.
If you have a phone case get one that will just clip onto that.

I've just bought some cheap ones from there, hopefully they will work. I assumed some were model specific. I'm unsure why some stylus pens can be quite expensive

    Some are just dabbers.

Others are (usually Bluetooth) connected devices in their own right that talk to enabled applications on the phone/tablet. Can detect things like the pressure being exerted in order to control drawing line width. Can also come with buttons that allow mouse-like use.

That's true, but the latter type need a compatible screen.
