    The species of the tree will have a bearing on how you approach that. If it is a Oak the timber will have a value, if it is suitable for logs someone may remove it for free, leaving you just the smaller branches and offcuts to deal with.

    But if it is a Ash you will have to follow the requirments to contain Ash die back disease, so I would say the first thing to do is find out what species the tree is and if it is Ash seek professional advice.
