Student overseas insurance

Hi, wonder if anyone has had similar experience or can advise?

My son is currently in Canada on 4 month uni exchange - insured through uni.
He has decided to stay an extra 3 weeks after course ends for a holiday  lin usa/canada including a ski trip.
Our insurance (attached to bank account) and search engine insurers will not touch him as already there.
Have only found 1 broker willing to insure at £550.

Was not expecting such a high cost

Have you spoken to the Uni about extending the cover?

if you google something like "travel insurance if already travelling" you'll find several intermediaries selling policies for those already travelling. Assuming he's circa 20 and no pre-existing conditions then I suspect you can get cheaper than you've been quoted but it will be expensive. You're combining North America travel which has exceptionally high cost of medical treatment and liability claims with snow sports that have a high rate of injuries to yourself and others. The two will compound each other.

Add to that looking at the "already left" matter where there are relatively few providers so not much competition pressure on pricing and its almost always a one off purchase so acquisition costs have to be covered in full.

Suggest also he check with the provincial health insurance to see if he's covered through that.  Won't get him home but might cover his medical bills should he fall on the slopes.

  • Thanks for advice. We are waiting to hear back from uni about extending insurance. I will look into provincial insurance in the meantime.
  • Update for anyone in similar position.- it took time to confirm with uni insurance but they extended for $70
