I have a series of vertical scratches spaced about 4-6 inches apart on the drivers side (outside) of my windscreen.
No idea how they got there -- when using an ice scraper, I always scrape horizontally - and these scratches are vertical
They are barely detectable with a finger nail.
Any ideas on if these could be removed easily/safely myself or is this a job for someone who knows what they are doing ?

I have used Cerium Oxide polish successfully to remove very light scratches from a windscreen.
I am unable to imbed the link.

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".1 -
Are they visible from the Driver's seat and in the wipers' swept area?
https://www.autoglass.ie/windscreen-scratch-removal-guide/ is a windscreen replacement company's take on the problem...
Most car insurance will pay for a repair (from their authorised company/ies) if you want, with a small contribution from you aka the excess - mine is £20. Likely better than you making the problem worse if in your view of the road.

Have just checked with my garage- they wouldn’t cause an MOT fail.
Bought some glass polishing compound to try- will test on a rear quarter pane first0
