"Dear [Bank],
Please close my account, number [xxxx], and send me the closing balance by cheque [or 'transfer the closing balance to account x']"?3 -
They normally do send a statement.Or to make sure, ask in the letter which closes your account. Ask for statements for transactions after.....Something like:As part of the closure, please send me all statements for transactions on or after dd/mm/yyyy.1

If it's a current account just switch it to your "now" current account using the CASS switching scheme. You start it from your "now" account so you don't need to deal with the supermarket one.2

Or would just my signature be OK. I think they do have my signature on file, because I wrote to them in the past about other matters.3 -

P.S. I can only withdraw money at a cash point, so there will be a small balance of under £10 remaining on the account. Can I ask them to send me a cheque when closing the account? If you know the exact balance and are still able to pay money into the account then could you top the balance up to a round £10 and then withdraw that at a cashpoint? You run the risk the cashpoint won't let you withdraw the £10 if that leaves you with a zero balance, but then all you need to do is to close the account and ask them to send you a cheque as you are planning to do anyway.Whether you then ask them to close the account, or wait for them to close it because it has a zero balance for 'x' months is up to you, but the latter option would save you the cost of a stamp.1 -
I agree that the simplest option is to just send a letter as eskbanker has suggested and await the bank's response.
