There is no minimum age to enter into a contract in the UK, else pocket money would be unspendable and no one could get a weekend job before 18.ripplyuk said:If your son wants this tracksuit, then let him pay the fees. If he doesn’t, or can’t afford it, then since he’s a minor I can’t see him being taken to court if he doesn’t pay. He’s not old enough to enter a contract.
A contract isn't binding on a minor though and as such companies will refuse to contract with a minor because who wants to be bound to something when the other side isn't. In the UK there is however a carve out for "necessities" which includes food, education, employment, accommodation and clothing
A 16 year old can move out and live alone... do you think they'd not be able to buy clothes or food for a further 2 years? Or say they had a baby at 16, likewise not be able to buy it any clothes or formula or nappies?
This mystery company however is somewhere in the US and so laws on minors and contracts may very well be different.0 -
At 15 for purchases they are.ripplyuk said:If your son wants this tracksuit, then let him pay the fees. If he doesn’t, or can’t afford it, then since he’s a minor I can’t see him being taken to court if he doesn’t pay. He’s not old enough to enter a contract.
If it was finance then that is a different matter.Life in the slow lane0 -
You’re right. I was in a rush but should have been more pedantic with my wording. I know a minor can technically enter a contract but it will be unenforceable.Grumpy_chap said:
I don't think that is complete. A minor can enter a contract for necessaries (food, clothing and such like) which a track suit would fall under. Also contracts to benefit the minor, such as for education or employment.ripplyuk said:He’s not old enough to enter a contract.I really cannot see customs taking action against what is essentially a child. If it was my son, I’d do nothing and let it be a lesson to him. If he was 16yo I’d be slightly more concerned, but he’s not.0
