iPod touch help!

Can anyone help/ just got an iopod touch. When i connect it via my laptop, all I get on the screen is a charging symbol. It doesn't appear as a device i9n My computer, except as a 'camera' in scanners and cameras. I can't get my laptop or iTunes to recognise it. what am I doing wrong??????

have you downloaded the latest version of iTunes? (not sure what number the latest one is off the top of my head, but its available free on the apple.com website) I had that problem when I first plugged my ipod nano in, but downloading a later version of itunes fixed it.Win 2008 in 2008 member number.....237!!!
