How to claim ESA

Options
Provided someone who is self employed has sufficient NICs, how do they go about claiming ESA?
In the first instance do they get a sick note from their GP? Then complete a claim form?

Comments

  • Thanks for this. The link does not say whether you have to get a sick note before you start to claim.  Does anyone know?

Yes, you will need to provide fit notes when you claim. It also says in the link you need a fit note. Fit notes are formally known as sick notes.

    What you need to apply

    You’ll need:

    • your National Insurance number
    • your bank or building society account number and sort code (you can use a friend or family member’s account if you do not have one)
    • your doctor’s name, address and telephone number
    • fit note (sometimes called a ‘sick note’ or a ‘statement of fitness for work’) if you’ve not been able to work for more than 7 days in a row because of a disability or health condition
