Motorhome/MPV/Van for europe trip ?

  • We have a caravan so a bit slower travelling than a motorhome or camper van, but we stop for two nights in France and that is just travelling to the Dordogne (entry point Cherbourg).  It is tiring and even though the autoroutes are less busy than our motorways (and less roadworks and in good condition), you do have to concentrate due to driving on right.  French drivers tend not to use their indicators - the speed limit is also higher than here on the autoroutes.  Around cities the autoroutes get busy.  Tolls, unless you have a tag, you will have to stop and pay and Peages are numerous.  You will need to stop for rest/lunch breaks and give the dogs a walk.  We pay £250 for our two dogs' AHC and that is cheap compared to some vets.

We had two trips this year to France, in May and September.  The weather was poor in May, chilly and wet (Dordogne).  September we went to the Niort region (about an hour from La Rochelle), again we didn't have good weather, overcast most days and when it was sunny it wasn't much warmer than the UK. The Loire was even colder.  Overall, it was a bad year.  Previous years for us have been better so perhaps it was a one-off, or perhaps it is going to be a pattern with the climate emergency.

Sorry to be a bit of a party pooper.
  • With Animal Health Certificates I noticed when I was looking recently that quite a few places now offer a reduced rate for subsequent dogs at the same address. It was something like £100 for first dog and £20 for subsequent. Which I've not seen before but does make some sense because much of the work has been done and is the same for the first as subsequent. Frustratingly my guys will have had Irish Pet Passports initially (2 of them were Irish track dogs) but they're well expired now and the only one I physically have has incorrect details.

We got a kind vet at our practice who did two dogs AHC for £160.

Spent 3 weeks in France in September with a caravan. We were determined not to go South to save travelling, but as the weather was poor we decided to go and had very good weather there. Our favourite bit is the area between Beziers and Marseille with decent bike tracks and leisure activities.

Beware negotiating campsites, narrow access roads, sharp turns, overhanging trees that can all make it more of a challenge than in the UK.
