Lowell debt collection

Hello, I'm new here and I'm looking for some advice please 🙏
In 2019 I paid a final British gas bill of £2192.00 at the time we was moving out of the country and I had to shredd all my paperwork as I had nowhere to keep it as we had sold and got rid of all our processions.
Lockdown happened and we ended up staying in UK.
In 2020 I was contacted by lowell debt collection to say the had an outstanding debt of the above sum of which I had paid off but unfortunately shredded the evidence along with other paperwork/bills I had, I contacted British gas who wouldn't help stating they had sold the debt on.
I emailed lowell in 2020 to say that I want to go to court over this as I'd paid it and British gas had made a mistake...they sent me evidence that doesn't even add up...I've had no contact with them since at all and have recieved a letter to say that I will be getting a vist off a debt collectors,  I've paid once in full and am not paying twice...what can I do please ? Thankyou

    How did you pay?

If via a bank there will be a trail with the bank - unless you took two grand of cash to the local post office...

If via bank transfer or similar, get a bank statement for that time.

Don't let them in, make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked.

Debt collectors have no right of entry. If they do get in, you treat them the same as any other trespasser. Instruct them to leave, and if they refuse, reasonable force can be used to eject them.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

You don't have to do anything. As you rightly say, in a dispute like this the creditor (Lowell) should ask the court to rule on it.

Contrary to popular opinion, debt buyers don't take court action on many debts.

So it stays in limbo until it goes statute barred some time next year.

If they want to send a rep around you just need to say 'no thanks' and shut the door. There will be no bailiffs without a defaulted court order.
