Bad timing? What to do?

Options
So currently with Eon.Next at a rented property, the fixed price ends on the 18th of December and we are moving into a new rented property on the 2nd of January and are looking at moving to Octopus Energy.

However, our tenancy doesn't end in the current property until the 9 February and we planned for the crossover to get everything moved and sorted but what to do?

Let Eon.Next roll onto a variable for a month and a bit and cancel at the end of the tenancy? Or move current to Octopus now and run a separate account at the new place alongside?

I don't think going onto another Fixed at EON would be worth it as we would likely get an early termination fee in Feb.

I'd say as it's short term go for whatever doesn't have an exit fee.  That will cost more than a difference in tariffs.

  • I do wonder if I'm overthinking it and it's costing me more in effort than I'd benefit from any potential savings for such a short period.

Last time I moved I had to take on the previous owner's provider before switching to someone I wanted to be with.  Seems like you are perhaps causing yourself more work than is necessary?  Or perhaps things have changed.  It's just that you might switch from E.on to Octopus now and find your new property is with BG or whomever so you'll have at least 2 different companies to sort through in a short while.

You can set a switch in motion before you move, we did this earlier this year and had Octopus take over the electricity the day we moved in. The gas switch did fail but that was due to an issue with the meter not matching the address. You do need to be absolutely sure of your moving dates though.

    I Took over a flat 3rd Feb 2023 but current tenancy didn’t end till15th

I kept what I had (OVO) and let it run out and signed up with Octopus at the new place

The least hassle in my opinion

I'd let it roll onto the SVT. You'll only be paying those rates for a couple of weeks then moving out. Will be just standing charges from 2nd Jan to 9th Feb and they would be similar price whoever you are with.

Set up an account at the new place with whoever was supplying the previous occupant. As soon as that is done you are free to switch to another company, that's the time to go with Octopus.

Yes, to be honest I'd agree with this. By far the easiest thing to do is just to go on to EON's standard rate and then switch after you've moved. If you try and do something clever like starting a switch before you move you run the very real risk that something goes awry and then it can be a devil of a job to sort it out. I'm sure you'll have more than enough to do moving anyway. So personally, I'd just take the (probably quite small) hit and take the easy route.

If you want to put a number to it, if you post your approximate monthly usage for gas and electricity here, your region and which Octopus tariff you were thinking of moving to then someone here will be able to do the sums for you.
