Disability adaptation and SMI

Options
Hi,
I am 63 year old who leaves wtih my parents and am their full time carer.
My Dad is 92 year old blind and hard of hearing will limited mobility. Mum is 86 with no mobility and dementia and high anxiety.
We have had our house adapted with a lift from street level to front door, a through the floor lift inside the house and bathroom which  is now fully wheelchair accessible.
Can I apply for both disability adaption and SMI council tax discount

If council tax bill is in your parent name and your mum claims a disability benefit and GP is willing to sign the SMI form then yes you can apply. Sorry not sure about the banding reduction.

    Thank you Rubyroobs
  • Whether you qualify for the Disability Discount depends on your local authority's decision re the adaptation to the property for the wheelchair.  It reduces our council tax by one property band.

Your mother can be exempted from Council Tax because of severe mental impairment and if either of your parents or you receive a disability benefit like Attendance Allowance, DLA or PIP, though the mobility component doesn't count, you should not be regarded as a Non Dependant reducing the amount of Council Tax Support they may receive.

I assume that you are claiming Carer's Allowance.
