Car insurance

Options
Please advise: I took out car insurance over a month ago. Only issue is that when I took out my car insurance, I was still insured with previous company for another month, by accident. I thought about changing dates but decided to leave it thinking at least I am covered.
My new car insurance requested further documentation that was sent.
i received an email earlier this week to say they were cancelling my policy as had not received documents. Contacted them and they found the emails that I had sent a few weeks ago with requested documents.
my question is: I was emailed with a charge for £212 extra (on top of the insurance I have already paid in full) because my no claims cannot run with 2 insurance companies for just over a month. Due to the overlapping it means they have taken me to 0 years for one month before being able to add ten years. This is what apparently my £212 is for!
I just got off the phone with them saying this is daylight robbery and was given the option to cancel at over £200 !
I am damned if I do and damned if I don’t!
am I totally in the wrong or have I just been totally screwed over and unable to do anything?!
please advise….thank you

    you are in the wrong.

NCB cannot be used on both policies at the same time. They are correct the policy would have been started at 0
your £212 could include an admin fee for mid term changes

your best option would be to ask them if they would cancel the policy on the basis you were already insured, so no charges for that period and start the policy from when your old one ended.

It's not that it cannot be used by two different insurers but that it cannot be used on two separate policies. Even if you had bought the new policy with the same company you'd still have had the same problem.

Ultimately you declared you had a free NCD to use on the vehicle when you didnt, your somewhat lucky they said you could move it over after a month, the companies I worked for you couldn't add a NCD mid year.

I always though asking the insurance company to cancel an insurance is a bad idea, as a question normally asked is "have you had any insurance cancelled by insurer"
That would mean a yes answer.

No, it's you cancelling, not the insurer.

No, it's you cancelling, not the insurer.
But that's isn't what's written "they would cancel the policy"

Then by that logic wouldn’t the answer to that question always be yes?
