Excepted Estate - Understanding

I have tried to search the forum for an answer but am still confused. The question is only for my own understanding at this time.
My Dad's currently in care and his assets are below the IHT limits. Also, his assets are spread over various bank accounts in his name with me as POA. None of the account values in any bank exceed the actual amount that would require Probate in the future.
I have read that you would still need to apply for Probate even if you do not need it? Is this correct. Many thanks.

You would only need probate where any assets can’t be released without it, so it sounds like you will not need it.2

Managed to get through the deaths of both my in laws without probate being required. Not been asked for anything from any banks due to the value of the estates.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards.
