Universal credit for my son

I’m just starting out looking if my 21 year old son who lives at home is able to receive any benefits. He has been struggling with very poor mental health for a few years and hasn’t managed to stay in employment for more than a few months at a time. He has started to talk about his problems and we are realising this may be a long term problem. While we go through the nhs waiting for assessment can he apply for some financial help? We are obviously happy to help him as much as we can but he really needs some additional income for basic needs. We are also getting older and are concerned that we might not be in a position to keep supporting his living expenses. Does anyone have any advice on this?

He can apply for Universal credit as long as he doesn't have savings over 16K. he would need to hand in sick notes to avoid being asked to do intensive work searching.1

You should also look into the possibility of him claiming PIP: https://www.gov.uk/pipFor completeness you/he can put his details into one (or more) of the online benefit calcuators to see what they say he would be entitled to claim: https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
