OP, might be worth considering the train or other public transport. I've had Business Class 1 on my car for 30 years, and as others say it doesn't usually cost much extra to add on but their might be an admin fee - for a one off it might be more costly. Generally, when I travel out of district for work we get mileage or 2nd class train fair, whichever is lower. I usually go on the train and get my own ticket or ask work to make the arrangements. Last time I got first class travel for the same price that my employer paid me for the 2nd class equivalent, so happy days.

At least your employer was sensible... a former colleague was needing to travel short notice and there were no standard class advanced tickets left but there were first class. So standard class was £80 or so and first was £50 so he bought the first ticket to save money.

They refused to reimburse him anything for the ticket saying he'd broken the travel policy by not getting an executive approval to travel first before buying the ticket

As mileage is paid your employers should be checking you have business insurance to cover themselves should there be a significant claim against you.
I agree with this. As an employer all employees wishing to claim mileage must confirm that they have a valid driving license and that they have valid insurance for business use, they are required to reconfirm as appropriate.

When I have checked on renewal how much it adds to my insurance it has always been less than £10.

When I was working I always had business use.
But it was for my convenience, not theirs, I would never admit to having it, so that they couldn't ask me to "just nip out and....".

But it meant that there were no problems if I had to go to a different site on the odd day.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Thanks everyone. It only cost £2 to add business to the policy. £25 for the change to the policy. I'll just get it next year as standard just incase.

Thanks very much for your help.
