You should read all the meters the day you take possession, take photos as well.
Never let anyone else do it for you (except an official meter reader)
Wasn’t there a case on here within the last few days where an official meter reader had misread by around 1000 units?
    Yes, there was.

Yes, indeed.  Amazingly, he misread 4 out of the 5 dials.
He even got the 'easy' ones wrong.

He was nt a meter reader..he was a meter fitter ..They mostly would have very little training on dial meters . My very first dial meter I read I had to look at the sixth digit on the tenths dial just to see what the 10,000 pointer was doing ..That's how tricky they can sometimes get when the pointers align all on borders .
Meter fitters nowadays may not even have seen an old dial meter before on the job .They must be rare by now

Water in Scotland is paid for with your Council Tax, so contact the Council to say you have moved in to the property and they will organise your bill.   Metered domestic water is almost unheard of up here.

Are things different in Scotland? In England you first need to sign up to the incumbent supplier, and once you have an account set up with them, then you can switch to your supplier of choice.
You can sign up directly with the new supplier... hence why for BG it asks if you are moving into the home or just switching supplier.

Gas/Electric arent different. Water is because there is a much higher prevalence of those not on mains, you must have a certificate when you sell to say if its mains or not and its billed as part of your council tax still (unless youre in the small minority with a meter)

iirc c60% of homes in England / Wales are now metered - and soon even more will be as there are or were mandatory fitting programs in several areas.  Its not just a new homes thing anymore.

    Scotland - ??

With a prediction for  c80% in next decade iirc.

We are Scotland.   Our son owns a former farm so is on metered water for some outbuildings, but has own filtered  water supply from borehole for the house.    He also has a  septic tank.  Septic tank is common in rural areas, metered water is not common in domestic situations, and certainly not in towns.

You can get a meter, but it will cost you to set it up, and the saving, if any,  is not that great, so most do not bother.
