gas cover with British Gas
Hi,
do you guys bother with gas / drain cover?
I pay £21.00 a month for this and must have forked out over £600.00 over the last few years - I'm beginning to wonder whether I'd be better just paying this amount into a savings account each month and then using it if I need to sort any gas problems out and saving it if I don't!?!?
Any thoughts?
thanks,
Duncan

My approach with things like this is just that, to have back-up savings in a high interest account and put the money there. If you add up all these "extra" insurances, and things like long term cover on electrical goods etc, there is a significant amount of money involved. Electrical good have typically 1 years guarantee from the manufacturers. Thats the first period when they are most likely to fail. The other is at end of life.
I haven't lost out yet!0 -
british gas offer boiler/central heating cover at £15.50/month - £186/year.
Does anyone know of any better deals?
Has this topic been discussed before?0 -
Yeh, that's the one I use - but I also pay £5.00 a month for the drains/plumbing cover.
I suppose its one less thing to worry about by having this all covered, but it's just so annoying when nothing every goes wrong with stuff!
I know for a fact that if I cancelled it the boiler would pack in and cost a grand!
Probably not worth the risk ....
Don't think this topic has been discussed before - I had a good look around this site before posting.

I have the boiler cover from BG. I took out the additional 3 kitchen appliances cover for a further £8/month too.
The total payment is £23/month. For that, I get my boiler serviced once a year, and peace of mind, that should anything go wrong with it, one phone call is all it costs to get it fixed.
I have been considering dropping the appliance cover, but our washing machine is getting on a bit, and BG have been out three times in the last year to repair it (we originally added the app cover as we knew the washing machine was on its last legs ... that was over a year ago).
I'm not big on insurance you don't need, but the BG boiler/app cover is worthwhile to me.

There have been lots of threads on this subject:

is just one.
Whilst opinions are mixed on BG, nobody has come up with another firm with a better service/price compromise.
It should however be treated as insurance and on balance you will probably pay more in premiums than the cost of work carried out. - and personally I am glad if that applies to me!!0
