Notice of default sums - First Late payment

Options
Hi All,

I've just recieved an online document from Santander for my first ever late payment with a £12 charge.

I'm usually all over my personal finance but due to a number of distraction including our first baby and full house renovation, its a case of I simply forgot.

The letter was dated 28/11/24 and I've just cleared the balance in full as of tonight 30/11/24. Going forward I've also set up a direct debit to clear in full each month. I don't have an answer to why I hadn't set this up before. My line of thought was that I'll always on top of my finances and can do this manually. Sadly I hadn't quite appreciated the increase in reality of increase in responsibilities transistioning from young buck to adult (31).

Both me and wifes credit files are squeaky clean with top marks. I'm gutted this has happend as I'm usually the one thats barking on about the importance of credit file to freinds and family.
I'm now worried about the potential impact of this on my file. Could anyone with experience advise?

I've had a quick skim on the forum and read that a Notice of default sum for a late payment may not be as severe as it appears but just want to confirm the impact this will have on a remortgage due in 2 years time? Any advice is highly appreciated.

  • If you have been with Santander a while maybe call them and have a conversation, they may waive this as a good will gesture.

Something similar happened to me with nationwide years ago and as there had been no issues over numerous years they reversed the charges as good will.

As many will say on here correctly - ignore your score it never counts it is more your payment history and other factors

As for mortgage in 2 years I would not expect this to be affected

1 late payment is no big deal. A d/d set up for the minimum payment is a safeguard against this.

    Hi All,

I've had various accounts including a credit card with them for over 13 years and never missed a payment.
I will try my best to see if they can waive or remove the record of the late payment.
Happy to accept the £12 charge just don't want that showing up on the file.
I'll report back to update on how it pans out.

    Many Thanks

There is no point.  As it is a reflection of fact, they will not change it.  Besides, it will have a minimal, if any, impact on your credit standing.  Really, you are worrying over nothing.

Santander advised they couldn't see it logged as a late payment perhaps as I'd reacted to clear the balance within 2 days. They also stated a missed payment would not be removed on record if it had been noted.
I've check on credit Karma and Clearscore and not seeing any late payments.
Will check back in a few weeks to see if there are any changes.

Perhaps I am. More annoyed with myself if it did show up as a stain on my squeeky clean record
