Self Assessment Calculation & HMRC contact as POA

Warslet said:Thanks again everyone for the comments. The interest received and subject to SA is from funds in her own name. I am registered as POA for all of them including her current account. HMRC also made the cheque payable to me with no reference to my MIL or me as POA on the cheque. Perhaps that is normal but would have thought payee would be my MIL. I think your assumption is correct @ Dazed_and_C0nfused about a previous year's estimated interest as there was an amount on her Notice of Coding. There is no reference to this on the SA calculation. I will call them tomorrow and give an update which may be useful to someone else in a similar position. I too find it odd that they haven't noted interest reported to them. Last year she received in excess of £4500 which was reported correctly and was on her Notice of Coding.
She (well you on her behalf) is completing a Self Assessment return. So what the bank has reported is irrelevant at this point. It is up to you (on behalf of your m-i-l) to enter the correct income details on the return.
If HMRC hold information which suggests the return is wrong then they have a year from when the return was filed to open an investigation and ask questions about the return.1 -
Update on the Self Assessment calculation. I called HMRC and when they checked their system they stated I had not completed the interest section on the form. I asked for the actual form to be checked. I had completed the interest section of the form but it wasn't input onto their system correctly. Another calculation would be sent in the next week. It was suggested I bank the cheque and use these funds towards any underpayment.
Thank you all once again for your input.2 -

I submitted a SA recently and they wrote back telling me that the pension entitlement was higher than I'd provided. Turns out they were using this year's entitlement against last year's assesment.0
