How do I connect my Wii to the internet?

Hoping someone can help direct me in the right direction for cables/adapters etc.

We have a wired broadband connection, with a Huawei Smart AX MT882 modem (see http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.TALKTALK.STATIC.HELP.MODEMTYPE) and connect using Ethernet. Our PC is also a good 5 metres from the phone socket, and we use an extension lead.

I've read the Wii booklet, and some comments online but i'm still confused. There's no free slots on the modem!

I know (or i think i know!) we need a LAN adapter, but have read a few comments which suggest we need a 'crossover cable' as opposed to a 'patch cable'.

Can anyone advise? I'm terrible at this stuff!

Thanks in advance!

  • Personally, I would be tempted to suggest that you invest in a wireless router, such as the Netgear 834G

You can then connect the Wii wirelessly using the in built wifi and use a patch cable to connect the router to your PC, but you would need to download the latest firmware before installing the Netgear, see this help topic from talk talk
  • Thanks Red Rose.

Anyone have any ideas for a wired connection though?
  • The Wii LAN Adapter enables a connection from an ethernet port on your wired access point, to one of the USB ports on the back of the Wii console.

Please note that other, non-Nintendo manufactured devices may not work correctly with the Wii console.

This may well be a case of trying to force you to get the official one, I am sure the Wii experts can confirm that others work equally as well, in which case you are talking less than a fiver rather than £18 for

I can confirm it's dead easy to do the wireless setup but I can't help with wired sorry, however if you have no free ports on your current router now might be a good time to go wireless, I was looking yesterday for a wireless router with modem for my sister and they start at around £30, you would almost pay that for the adaptor and you would need the cable on top plus the plugging and unplugging would get on my nerves after a few times.
Don't forget the security if you go wireless!

  • Any other advice from Wii experts? Ideally i want to keep a wired connection. Is there an adapter do make my one and only Ethernet port into a double?

  • Thanks Devizes, I've looked into it and its looks like a good compromise. Will it still work considering my Wii is about 6 metres away from my PC, and round a corner too? I've no experience with Wi-Fi at all!

Our Wii works on the internet and it is 2 floors above the Wireless Router. The only sting now with the Wii internet is that they charge you for the priveledge. You used to be able to download the internet channel so you could go online from the menu, but now they charge you 500 points to download it and you can't access the internet without it. To do this you need to pay the minimum £7.00 for 1000 points, then with 500 points put the internet on. Then you will have 500 points spare for a game or whatever...
Our dream has come true... :D
