Having parcel collected from Abroad - customs documents?

I need to have a parcel collected from a Polish seller who does not post to the UK. I don't know what the requirements are for customs documents into the UK, and am wondering if the information I might be asked for by UPS will be sufficient if customs have any issues?
Is it a requirement to at least have a commercial invoice attached to the outside of the item. I don't know if the retailer will do any of this for me if they want to avoid being considered the sender of the item to the UK.

Easiest if you arrange for the retailer to ship the item. They are for customs purposes the shipper.0
