I'm writing to ask for your advice on a difficult situation. My daughter, who just turned 18, wants to attend Manchester University next September. Unfortunately, due to Me and my wife high income  she's only eligible for a small student grant of £4,000 per year. This amount is far from enough to cover her accommodation or living costs.

My and my Partner  struggling with our own debts and are unable to provide additional financial support. My daughter is determined to be independent and wants to live in university accommodation.

I'm wondering if there are any other options or loopholes within the student finance system that could help her situation. Could she potentially be considered independent if she moves out and lives on her own? If so, what kind of proof would be required?

Any advice or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. We're feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to proceed.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Is it possible for her to get a job when at university?

My daughter is full time in university but she works evenings & some weekends to bring in money.

Moving out won’t help, only students who are estranged from their family, married or over 25 are considered independent.

Is it possible for her to live at home? Student accommodation varies in price and quality, so there may be cheaper options to consider.

If you can’t restructure your debt repayment to be able to offer some of your high earnings to her, another option may be to delay university for a year and for her to work to save some money before going to university.

Incidentally,  minimum student loans are as follows:
    • Living at home
The minimum maintenance loan is £3,790 for students with household incomes of £58,307 or higher.
    • Away from home, outside of London
The minimum maintenance loan is £4,767 for students with household incomes of £62,347 or higher.
    • Away from home, studying in London
The minimum maintenance loan is £6,647 for students with household incomes of £70,098 or higher.
