Know I'm going to be called every name under the sun but don't you think that people who work in shops deserve a day off as well? This may come as a surprise but some of them have families and a life outside of their work. I love a bargin as much as the next person but as a matter of principal refuse to shop on New Years Day or Boxing day for that matter. Dont suppose many will agree with me and will insist that those who work are "volunteers" but in the real world it's more a case of work it or look for other employment.
    anyway having had my winge

you are legally entitled to sunday off if you request it. i was always told that at my old job. all i had to do was send HR a letter, takes a few weeks to kick in, but it was good for the people who did it!

My OH works in a shop and amazingly they shut on Boxing Day/New Years Day. but Im sure with all this time off people have and nothing better to do than go to the shops, there will come a time when she has to work these two days along with Easter Sunday. Double or Triple time isnt worth going in for after the taxman takes his cut, plus the chance to spend it with family is far more important. In the run up to Christmas she works her !!!! off dealing with all the happy cheery never a grumble customers she serves day in day out.

So the chance of a day or two off is very welcoming and I for one look forward to her being off.

No, depends on your contract and the business needs of the employer. For those who worked before Sunday trading became standard they could opt out of working sundays.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

IME (and this dates back over 15 years) most shops are open sunday hours. When I was younger it used to be the first day I'd hit the sales :)
