Next to the meter readings on your Octopus statement it will say one of these:Smart meter readingCustomer readingData collector readingEstimated readingThey are self explanatory and, as has been said, don't assume a smart meter will actually be sending the readings in.Back billing will not apply, but they should have been more helpful when you first contacted them querying your statements.

I have no problem with paying what I used. and they’ve come back to me and done exactly what I didn’t want to happen.

In your situation I would have thought - Oh Octopus haven't charged me for gas this month, perhaps they've had a problem getting a reading. I would have gone to the meter, obtained a reading and put the figures in online, either app or webpage. This would have generated a bill and he problem would have been sorted.
The gas meter reading is picked up by the communications hub that sits on top of the electric smart meter. This can mean there's sometimes problems with the signal and the reading can't be accessed, especially if there's some distance or walls between the meters. Be aware of this and start giving Octopus a monthly gas reading if this is ongoing.

It was obvious that the meter wasn't reporting the gas so how did you expect them to produce an actual bill with you giving them actuals?Dippygoose said:

It shouldn't be necessary, but does prepare you for the bill when it eventually comes.
