Switching registration at renewal to save on fees

I want to put a registration that I have on retention onto my car and was thinking of doing it at my insurance renewal to save the fee for swapping it with my current insurer. Normally on the comparison websites you enter your reg to get the quote, but obviously my new reg won’t be associated with a car at the moment.
The plan was to do quotes 3 weeks before renewal and then do the reg change a few days before renewal while the car sits on the drive unused.
Any idea how this would work?

Personally I would just switch on the day the new insurance starts.Quote with old reg
check admin fees/give them a call - some may waive the fees if the reg change is done early
buy your one of choice0 -
Interesting subject, I have a personal plate and am picking up a brand new car in the next few days. I phoned the insurer (Aviva) before buying the new car for a quote as to the cost of changing, etc. to my surprise, they said they could only quote if I gave them the registration number, which obviously didn't exist... The dealer will give me 5 days of complimentary insurance to allow time for the existing insurer to get their act together. In the past, the arrangement was to register the new car with an ordinary number, then transfer the personal plate once the paperwork arrived from the DVLA. Now because it is all done via the web, it can be changed in a matter of minutes and the dealer said there is no need to use a temporary number... However, he has jumped the gun a little and taken off my personal plate from the current car via the DVLA/web but I cannot fit the old plate as I haven't the V5 for the original number. I am advised by the dealer that using the personal plate on the old car for a few days is not an issue, even though a check on the DVLA site shows the number doesn't now exist. Any thoughts on whether that is legit?0
