Connecting a portable DVD player to TV ?

Options
Hi all,

Yeah i realise no-one watches DVDs anymore  but i picked up a few from charity shop..
The only DVD player i have is a Sony portable that i had for camping trips or for nipper to watch in the car.
It still works well, in fact used it recently while we waited for Broadband installation ( Smart TV, and dont watch terrestial TV )

Anyway the Sony obviously has no HDMI or even SCART connection - it has Audio OUT, Video OUT and what looks like an ethernet connection.
Can i simply connect via Audio & Video out to my TV ?
TV has 2 x HDMI, one for sound bar and one for Now TV stick.

Thanks

  • Bet that's not an ethernet connector - Optical Out? Could you photo the connectors on the DVD player and the rating plate (if it's legible, or maybe just quote the model number).

Do you have a make and model? (TV and DVD player)
Or a photo of the rear of it?

The "ethernet" is likely to be an optical/TOSLink connector... will be squarer than a ethernet and if it's not broken have a spring door that covers it whilst not in use.

If it has a yellow coloured video out RCA then thats a composite connection. You will need to check if your TV has a composite input, if it doesn't you would need a Composite to HDMI convertor and need to make sure it's a proper one (it will require power, if the one you buy doesn't need power its a snake oil cable that won't work).

Personally wouldn't be buying anything for it. For £20 you can buy a brand new DVD player and get a HDMI connection which will get you a slightly better picture quality than you'll get from Composite. It will be SD content though, looks ok on a 28" TV... can look ropy on a 75"

Actually, film fanatics do use DVD (or at least UHD Blu-ray which is the latest equivalent). If you're going to spend £15k+ on a JVC projector and probably more than that on a sound system to go with it you will convince yourself you can tell the difference between the compressed film streamed by Netflix and the UHD Blu-ray version which has twice the bit rate. You'll stream too but have physical media for the best films.
  • Thanks for detailed replies both of you

Model is SONY DVP - FX770

Good point about not spending on it,  like you say could get a cheap DVD player with HDMI - i could unplug the NOW TV cable when i want to watch DVDs. I should have thought about that before i posted haha !!

The manual doesn't indicate any port thats anything like Ethernet... and states it doesn't have an optical out so not sure what you're looking at on that one.

According to the manual it has a composite out and a 35mm audio out which is a bit of pain... no doubt someone sells the right cable but a quick search on Amazon and can only find a one cable but its female ends so would need a second cable or by a 35mm to RCA and a separate composite cable but still two purchases so circa £10 and as you haven't given the model of the TV there isn't a guarantee it as a composite input.

£20 for a cheap DVD player is better than £10 on cheap cables. For a bit more you could get a blu-ray player which plays HD discs as well as DVDs if you think you may pickup more discs. UHD Blu-ray remain a niche and expensive product; worth it if the rest of the kit is to standard but not for your average TV using built in speakers or a soundbar.

Thanks again for further info, appreciated !

Taken your advice and picked up a Sony DVP-SR760H - for £40,  reviews are ok, should do the job.

My little town ( like most ) has several charity shops,so ill be mooching round them more often now :-
  • I got the exact model for my mum a couple of years ago. It's a perfectly good basic DVD player.
  • I last moved house 9 years ago, my DVD collection (maybe 200 movies) went into the loft and there it has remained.

I'm almost tempted to buy one of those Sony jobs and go and upset some spiders.

But, streaming. And where to put the things. And no free ports on the telly.

Yep, only 2 HDMI ports on my telly, and im saving the "ARC" one for the soundbar ( when i eventually unbox it... )

DVD player and NOW TV stick will have to share the other one, but thats no problem as obviously if im watching a DVD, i wont be streaming and vice versa

Always a bit nervous of frequent swapping of plugs in'n'out of HDMI ports especially as my TV is getting on a bit.

If Mr Panasonic had wanted me to be fettling those sockets frequently then he wouldn't have made them quite so difficult to get to.

I know you can get HDMI splitters, but dunno if they impact on picture quality etc
