If they ask again give them it back minus a fee for your time.

I will - but how do I give it back? There's no straightforward method open to me.

And again, I'm querying WHY they haven't got back to me. I'm aware that no-one can definitively answer that, but I thought someone might have some idea as to what might be going on behind the scenes.

Nobody on this forum can answer your question. Possibilities are a/l, sickness, they don’t know what to do or something else. Even if someone on this forum worked for your pension company, they can’t tell you because you are some random stranger on the internet and/or they would be giving away internal company deliberations. I imagine both of these actions are sackable offences.
Suggest you apply a zen approach and let it take its natural course.
Or if you want to push things along, ask the pension company if they can do a chargeback for the money as suggested earlier in the thread.

It should be on the pension company to deal with xe to get this resolved.   You can give any authorisation as required, but it's not your mistake, so not on you to fix.  It could be that they're doing this, which is why no contact to you.

If xe really can't return money accidentally paid into an account, then one alternative would be to do the double transfer, and any fees incurred are the pension companies problem.
