I need a new printer/scanner
My old Epson has seen better days
I need one that will take 3rd party cartridges - and is also not too expensive to run or buy
What is recommended ?
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Check your local charity shops, my current one (Cannon Pixima) cost me £5 from an Age UK shop.New ones seem to be tied into ink deals or as you say OEM cartridge limitations.0

Cheap to buy usually means harder to use aftermarket cartridges. Cat and mouse between the manufacturer and the aftermarket
ink suppliers.
Lookout for ink tank bargains, you can put anything you like into those. Get them to print a nozzle check and make sure its a current date
and see the number of printed pages.
Struck lucky on an Epson inktank where they bought several printers for review and decided not to use this one. Only used 1/4 of the tank
and the original bottles still had ink but it needed a deep clean to get a clean test print which used up the excess ink in the bottles.
I did buy genuine bottles, £70 for a set of 6 but as I said the printer does not know what your putting in there.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I can recommend the Epson Ecotank. The bottles last a couple of years and are very reasonable. Quality and reliability are excellent.0

We've got an HP 5510 which we've had quite a few years now. Keeps soldering on. We've put all sorts of ink cartridges in and not had a problem. Great for remote printing and scanning too. It's currently in the back bedroom but connects and prints fine.0
