The plan etc. is immaterial so I'll keep it simple and omit.  According to letter of reason one I have earned above the threshold in a previous tax year, but only marginally so (by just over £500) despite this, and for same reason as explained about repayment being deducted monthly based on monthly earnings where I was out of work for moist of the year, I was forced to pay over £400 of student debt off i.e. we are not talking voluntary repayment. SLC claim I cannot request this back, are they correct?  It seems very unfair if they are.

  • No refund due. SLC are correct.

Slc are correct, however you could have made a pension contribution for £501 and then been under the threshold and had the £400 returned.  Worth keeping an eye on your earnings near the year end.

Only if made by salary sacrifice. Otherwise gross earnings remain the same.
