"The OP said "We had the car repaired back to perfect condition".. What makes you think otherwise?"

Never seen a perfect repair yet from an insurance repair, broken fixings, incorrect fixings, poor paint match, poor alignment.

Unfortunately Insurance companies want to do the cheapest low quality repairs even if it compromises the structure of the car, structure being straightened as opposed to being replaced. Ironic that having instructed substandard repairs they won't want to acknowledge the car is now depreciated.

If you ever think you will ever end up in acceptable position post an insurance claim , think again !.
Then why do we have so many posts on here where someone was intending to get a third party car repaired themselves using a "Dr Dent" type service thinking it will be £100-£200 but then the insurer instructed garage presents a £2,500 bill?

Yes, generally they will prefer to use a bodyshop rather than a franchise dealer but then most franchise dealers just subcontract the work to a bodyshop, often the same one the insurer recommended, but just add a hefty margin on top.
  • Just because they rip off the insurance company doesn't mean they do a good job. I've had to had remedial work done on insurance repairs.

Not saying they always do a perfect job but their statement that they always do the cheapest possible repair is clearly not true, even your own view is that the insurers are being ripped off rather than getting cheapest option.
