I bought a brand new vehicle in June which I want to SORN.
The dealer paid the VED.
Will I get the refund or the dealer given that they paid?
Thanks!

  • It should go to the current Registered Keeper as per the V5C.

The refund goes to the registered keeper, whoever is on the V5C.

You only get back unused months of the relevant annual rate, any first registration premium is snaffled by the DVLA.

So if the first year rate was £2,745 your refund would be £190/12 = £15.83 per unused month?

    Yes, correct.

I bought a vehicle in March, RFL was £1565, declared SORN after 2 months so got back £150 (10/12 x £180)

    Sort of makes sense.

Otherwise if you got the full amount back you'd have to repay it when you next taxed it, (or you could do HMRC out of the registration fee by SORNING on the fist day and re-taxing it again on the second) and there would be a trivial calculation to work out the duty that would be beyond DVLA systems.

It would be better if the £2745 was shown as an initial registration fee of £2,555 plus 1st year's VED of £190, but I am obviously a simpleton ;)
