Whatever Happens old PC World insurance cover for Laptop - now with Currys

Hello all, I have a query with regards to an old 'Whatever Happens' insurance cover for my laptop which I took out in 2013 with PC World when I first bought the Laptop. It is £5 per month and is supposed to cover almost everything including accidental damage, breakdown and so on. It would include collection of the laptop from my house for repair and other handy extras. I never had to use this insurance and have so far paid around £660 into this insurance over 11 years. The terms and conditions (which I kept) state the insurance has no end date and there is no clause under which the terms can be varied. I still have the laptop and still pay the insurance. PC world has since been taken over by Currys and I got a letter recently from Currys, that they will move me into a new scheme, their Care & Repair plan which will still cost £5 per month but will have a lot less benefits than the 'Whatever Happens' plan I took out. I am not happy about this, as there is nothing in the original T&C saying they can simply alter the benefits and move me into a new plan. I don't want to simply cancel it, as I have already paid a lot into it and as the Laptop is getting on now, it is more likely to break and me wanting to use the insurance. Can they simply alter the terms like this despite the T&C I agreed to don't provide for this ?

First of all it is not insurance. It is a care plan cleverly disguised as insurance. There will be no underwriters as there would with insurance.
I would be looking at those T&Cs carefully as I would be amazed if you had cover that would still be viable after so long. Your laptop will have a 'Maximum Life' and at the end of that they will only offer you a voucher towards a replacement of a comparable laptop. As laptops are now like for like a lot cheaper than in 2013 yours will now be worth very little.
I would cancel asap as you have already thrown pounds away. You have probably paid 3 times over the original cost and now you are throwing good money after bad.
  • What do both policies say about wear and tear? I'd be surprised if anything now was considered anything but wear and tear
  • It doesn't say anything about this, let me try and upload the T&C, I can't find anything about an end date or anything like that

  • The above are the T&C of the original Care Plan taken out in 2013 and still being paid at £5 per month

You've been had paying £5 a month for that long. The device cant even be worth anywhere near what you've paid in that time

How much was the laptop. If it breaks down and is not affected by the 'Exclusions apply' then it will probably be beyond economic repair and you will end up with at most a voucher for £50 or so. Stop paying, cancel the plan.

    As above dump it now.

    MSE way.
Put that £5 in to a savings account & now you would have had a nice amount to buy a new laptop. 🤷‍♀️

It's not insurance, it's a service plan. Currys have owned PC World since 1993, well before you bought the plan.

Cancel it. Absolute rip off of a product.
