I've bought a subscription to Office 365 for my Windows 11 laptop and it's installed OK but the only way I can open it is by opening an existing Word document. Can I not create a desktop shortcut to it, or some other sensible way of opening the thing?

See your "all" section of the Start menu. They'll appear as the name of the program so don't bother looking for "Microsoft Word", it's just "Word" or "Excel" or whatever you need. You can put them on the desktop if you wish or pin them to the Start Menu.Or just type "Word" into the search bar.

Just as a footnote to the above, for home use..Access to the Office apps additionally does depend upon the subscription version you have purchased. The Basic version ( and Free) does not install the office apps on your PC so I found out recently. You only get Outlook and 100GB of cloud storage. I understand the Ofice apps can be installed if you already have a recent licence. That is all you get for the cheap £1.99 per month sub.Personal version and Family version whilst you pay more £5.99 and upwards include the installed Office suite.Provided you have a Microsoft account everyone can use the online Office products for free from a variety of platforms.2
