Unoccupied house insurance and building work

Hi. Following my mother-in-law's death we inherited her house, which is currently unoccupied. We are planning to have an extension built on our own house, and to move into the empty house while that work takes place (in about three months' time, and for up to six months). The insurance on the currently empty property is due for renewal now, and our own house insurance in January.

Can anyone advise on the best way to manage the insurance renewals? Should we take out a short-term policy, transfer our own insurance to the other property when we move in etc? Thanks.

my guess is to take an annual policy for both and then see what happens after that.  work takes longer than expected so how are you going to know for sure how long you need what?
